Welcome to the DAV Website
The DAV is a non-profit association which exists to promote debate. It is the peak debating body in Victoria and runs large competitions for adults and for schools across Victoria. It provides training and resources for debaters, teachers and adjudicators.

Do adjudicators get paid?
The payment for adjudicating a night (usually two debates) in the Schools Competition or Junior Schools Program is $64 ($55 for online rounds and up to $90 in some regional areas where there is a travel contribution). Adjudicators are required for two hours each night.

The more experienced adjudicators, may be approved for External Adjudications, for affiliated competitions. These are often intensive, running for a full day, and pay more than $150.

What is the Free Night?

Your membership is quite expensive to the DAV - it includes the cost of processing payments, office upkeep, and a number of subsidised social events throughout the year. Since $79 is a lot to ask in an upfront membership fee, we ask for $15 upfront, and ask adjudicators to provide their first round night of the year as a 'free night'. Most adjudicators do more than 10 nights per year, at $64 each, so the 'free night' isn't terribly onerous. It also helps encourage people to adjudicate more than once!

Do I have to pay GST?
Adjudicators are not DAV employees or contractors: we do not take tax out of your payments.
We require you to supply a "Hobbyist Declaration" (ATO NAT3346). Tick the first box to indicate that "supply is made to [the DAV] in my capacity as an individual, and the supply is made in the course of an activity that is a private recreational pursuit or hobby."

First year adjudicators complete this form at training, but returning adjudicators must complete the form each year. You must provide us with one of these before we can pay you. Please print it out and email a copy to the office (debater@dav.com.au).
